About

SO this is me!  I am a New Yorker, born and bred, who chooses to live in one of the toughest cities in the United States, Detroit.  I can’t get enough of food and cooking, and I love to help other people cook well and often.  My favorite chef’s are Julia Child and Jacques Pepin.  I also love Nigella, but she isn’t a chef by any stretch of the imagination.  I am a meat eater, married to a vegetarian, so nothing with a face.  In cooking for him, I have learned a great deal about making things from scratch, and making things the old fashioned way, with no meat products if possible.  That’s a big challenge, but I truly love it.  I also have a terrible habit of expecting to be able to buy, in Michigan, all the things I grew up with in NY.  Bad habit, but good in the sense that I now have made my own cheese, and all manner of things that I just can’t seem to find out here.

Detroit has a huge locavore movement going on right now, and you can find home raised chicken and eggs all over the place, not to mention all kinds of home made jelly, pickles cheese, bread… you name it.  It’s a very exciting time and place for a foodie!

  1. Good for you! You followed us, so I thought I’d see what your blog was up to. I was born in Petoskey and grew up outside of Kalamazoo, in Portage. Detroit was a different city then and I keep reading stories about the city that alternate between despair and a stubborn I’m-gong-to-make-this-work-goddamnit! ethic. I put you in the latter category, along with Geri Larkin and Jeff Daniels. I didn’t know that Detroit was an exciting place to be for a foodie (hate that term, sorry), but now you’ve piqued my interest. I’ll be back. ken
